2019 Letter from the Chapter President

Happy New Year, Eastern Iowa IFMA Chapter!

It has been a great year already in terms of guest speakers, round tables and tours. Some of the highlights have included our Sustainability roundtable, CEC hosting a guest speaker on Safety and Security, a tour of the new Cedar Rapids, Shive Hattery location, and our annual state of the business update given by Scott Olson.

Please make sure you are logging into ei-ifma.org to stay informed on the latest meetings, membership, and sponsorship news.

For those of you that may not have had a chance to attend a summer social or recent meeting, please know that we are continuing to try and provide meetings with meaningful information for Facilities Managers, and a great networking opportunity. If there is a topic you would like to hear more about, please feel free to reach out to us – we are always open to new ideas!

Last, but not least, we would like to once again thank our affiliate members for their support and generosity that they provide through sponsoring our chapter. 2018 marked the first year that our Eastern Iowa chapter presented a $5000 scholarship to a well deserving college student to further her education in a Facilities related field.  Below is a short note from the chapter's scholarship recipient, Rachel, an ISU Interior Design student:

It meant very much to me to be chosen as the recipient of the 2018 IFMA Scholarship. This meant that I was able to travel to Charlotte, NC for the IFMA World Workplace and be immersed in the Facility Management world. This exposure has given me a greater understanding of what it means to be a Facility Manager as an Interior Designer. The scholarship helped me to further my experiences and my education and I can’t express how valuable this whole experience has been to me. It was a pleasure to be able to meet the members of the Eastern Iowa Chapter. They were awesome about making sure that I was comfortable with the process from meeting the chapter beforehand, to spending time with me throughout the conference in Charlotte. I would recommend to anyone to get involved with IFMA and all it entails.

    Best Regards,
    Rachel Armstrong

Have a great 2019, and we hope to see you soon at a chapter event!

Fall 2017 - Letter from the President

Eastern Iowa IFMA members and potential new members:

The board has just finished up our yearly planning and recertification process, and we are excited to share the following developments with you:
We, as a board, are dedicated to promoting and growing the Facilities Management profession. We used a portion of our meeting time to develop a clear vision and mission statement, and are committed to aligning our goals and member meetings to these statements:

Mission: Advance the Facilities Management profession.

Vision: Focus on improving our value of Facilities Management through knowledge and education.  Provide scholarships and information sharing to the future generation of facilities managers, and support the growth of current FM professionals.

We are coordinating with IFMA Foundation to award one local Iowa student (graduating senior or current college student), a one-time scholarship for $6,750. This amount breaks down into a $5,000 educational scholarship toward a school of their choice, and $1,750 to cover the cost of travel, hotel, meals, and entry to IFMA’s World Workplace where we will personally award the scholarship to our chosen student.

We have planned an exciting year of tours, educational seminars, and networking events, including the following:

    • Zipline tour of the historic YMCA Union Park Camp in Dubuque.

    • Dean T. Kashiwagi, PhD, PE, IFMA Fellow from Arizona State University addressing the topic of Utilizing Innovation to Maximize Cost Savings.

    • Job Fair for high school/college students to meet FMs and our vendors to discuss career planning/engagement.

    • Click here to view the 2017-2018 meeting schedule.

We have added a Technology Chairperson and Communications Chairperson, who will focus on member engagement, technology for members to attend meetings via skype, and to improve our website and social media presence – stay tuned for developments.

We appreciate the support of all of our members and hope this “sneak peek” at our upcoming year will encourage you to join our monthly meetings and invite others who may benefit from our growing chapter!

    Best Regards,

    Paige Butterfield, EI-IFMA President

    • We chartered a new path to advance the facilities management profession with a $5,000 college scholarship to an Iowa college student, and an expense paid trip to 2018 IFMA World Workplace. We will partner with the IFMA Foundation for oversight and administration of the scholarship, which begins in the spring of 2018.
    • Eastern Iowa IFMA Chapter sponsor for the IIDA Great Plains Chapter Elevate event.
    • Trade show exhibitor at the Eastern Iowa’s Annual NextGen Vendor Fair Showcase.
    • We updated our website; we encourage member job postings and other relevant information for our chapter.
    • We developed criteria to provide members more value at our monthly meetings.

From members’ first time experiences zip-lining in Dubuque to getting a firsthand look at the Linn County Emergency Management facility this past fall, it’s truly been an exciting year. Looking ahead, there are several great opportunities you won’t want to miss:

    • Arizona State University guest speaker at the February meeting. Stay tuned for more details coming soon on our website. You won’t want to miss this event.
    • IFMA sponsored Job Fair for high school/college students; stay tuned for details about how you and your company can participate.
    • Annual Golf Tournament coming in June.
    • Let your passion shine! There are many opportunities to get more involved with our chapter initiatives – we welcome your involvement whether it’s 1-hour or every month.

Wishing the very best to you in the coming year!
