As Shive-Hattery’s Cedar Rapids office grew, the need for more space became apparent. The architecture and engineering firm wanted a space that not only offered more square footage, but would allow everyone to have an office on the same floor. Shive-Hattery also wanted a space that would showcase its design abilities across all disciplines, as well as freshen its image.

In a building across the street, a 31,000-square-foot floor plate was chosen as the new location. Originally considered six separate buildings, a large wall was removed and structural reinforcement was put in place to make the floor feel like it was one contiguous space.

The company brought together design teams from three locations to create a highly flexible, open-office design with private areas for HR and accounting. Although every employee has an assigned workspace, the floor can be reconfigured as needed. The office also provides shower areas and a bike storage facility. Eight casual conference areas, several smaller collaboration rooms, and a large training room with a moveable wall give employees plenty of places to meet for planned discussions or impromptu brainstorming. Large magnetic pinup walls promote idea sharing, collaboration, and brainstorming. Exposed steel, concrete, and wood, as well as different structural systems, were highlighted to illustrate Shive-Hattery’s work. When the building’s original tin ceiling was uncovered during demolition, it was salvaged and reused in the reception area.

This new headquarters location gives Shive-Hattery room to grow, making redesign and expansion easy. Approximately 80 employees work in the space; it can quickly be reconfigured to accommodate 100+. Designed to support collaboration and reflect company culture, all employees are now located on one floor for better communication and workflow.
